So many layers here… I was captured from the first line. Left me wondering as well. Is the place about to set on fire? Or is the worst of the damage over?

I read it maybe as making peace with things in our lives that we can’t get rid of, that have done their damage. Love knowing the story behind it.

I went to light a candle after work last spring, and I noticed there were termite wings on top of the wax by the wick. That’s what inspired me to pick up my pen and begin to write.

Like clockwork, they arrive at the end of every April — especially living close to the beach. There’s no way to keep them from entering the house. I suppose there are several ways this can be interpreted. The “Scarlett Goddess” is a recurring theme throughout my work. When I wrote the poem, I wasn’t even seeing the parallel I drew to the candle’s flame slowly extinguishing.

I posted this yesterday morning, and later in the evening, I noticed a small group of them swarming the lamp inside my studio.

Now, this piece feels more like a magic spell than anything.
